Our Range of Services

Screen Repair and Screen Replacement

Cracked and Damaged Screen Panel Replacement

It’s never good when your laptop or notebook computer’s screen gets broken or shows signs of being faulty. However, you might find out it’s not as big a disaster as you first thought.
In most cases, the display panel (in effect, the screen itself) will need replaced, but this is often more affordable than you might expect.

We keep many common display panels in our Broughty Ferry store, to help speed up the repair process for you.

Whether it’s a plain LCD, a TFT, an IPS screen, one with an LED backlight or even an OLED display, we can look at it for you.

In most cases, having your faulty screen fixed or replaced by ourselves works out significanly cheaper than buying a whole new laptop.

Dim Screen and Faulty Backlight Problems

In many cases, a “dark screen” can be caused by a faulty backlight. In such cases, you’ll often be able to dimly see what’s meant to be on the screen against the background, but it’s obviously not lit up. This is sometimes be due to a faulty inverter circuit in older laptops, or due to a number of other issues. We’ll be able to tell you more about this once we’ve had a look at your laptop.

Laptop Socket and Jack Repair

Faulty connectors, sockets and jacks are another frequent problem with portable PCs and Macs (including laptops, notebooks and netbooks). This issue is particularly common on lower-end, consumer-oriented models that were designed down to a price and never intended to stand up to heavy use.

The vast majority of connector faults relate to the charger (power) socket, with most of the others being to the headphone socket. (However, we can take a look at any other faulty connectors if necessary, including video out).

Many issues that get mistaken for a faulty battery– including charging problems- are actually due to faulty power socket connectors (or, in some cases, a fault with the charger itself). You don’t need to worry which it is, as we can diagnose this when you bring your laptop to us.

Faulty or loose sockets are also commonly-associated with intermittent problems that become worse over time.

We keep many of the most common power socket connections and other laptop connectors in stock, so we can repair your computer as fast as possible.

Key Replacement and Damaged Keyboard Repair

Laptop keyboard broken? Smashed-up keys on your notebook computer? We know the feeling.

Whereas it’s usually easy to replace the keyboard on a desktop computer- just plug another one in!- that’s not the case with laptops. Nowadays, the keyboard usually isn’t user-replaceable, and replacements can often be difficult to find anyway, as they’re usually specific to particular models.

That’s why we’re here to help! At Gadget Hero, we have experience in sourcing and fitting replacement keyboards for laptop computers. We keep many of the most common ones in stock, and know how to source many of the others. And we know how to do all this at a reasonable price for you!

Liquid Spillage on Your Keyboard

If your keyboard has suffered from a water or liquid spillage (or similar), see our advice elsewhere on this page about water damage and please bring your computer to us as soon as possible. (Liquid inside your computer can cause ongoing corrosion that gets worse over time).

Foreign Keyboard Replacement

Even if your laptop’s keyboard is a non-UK/GB model, we can usually source an identical replacement. That includes European layouts (such as QWERTZ, AZERTY and others), Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic and many more.

Noisy Fan, Cooler and Overheating Problems

Clogged-Up by Dust and Fluff

Over time, laptop computers and notebook PCs have a tendency to accumulate dust and fluff through their vents and get clogged up.

When this happens, it reduces the efficiency of the cooling system, often leading to overheating and- in turn- increased fan use. This is sometimes recognisable by more fan noise.

Eventually, overheating can lead to the computer turning itself off to protect itself from damage.

Cleaning our your laptop properly isn’t something that can be done without taking it apart- not for the faint-hearted! So if you think you have this problem and would like us to clean out your laptop for you, let us take a look at it!

Broken Fan Repair

A related problem is when the laptop’s fans themselves are damaged or broken. This can result in them becoming noisier, which is also a sign that they might not be working as well as they did before. If their peformance is degraded enough or they don’t work at all they can cause the same overheating problems (and your laptop turning itself off) as described above.

Again, fixing this is something that will require disassembling your computer. That’s typically not something a casual user will want to get into, but we’re able to do so.

Laptop Not Turning On or Turning Itself Off

If your computer keeps turning itself off for no apparent reason, there’s usually an underlying case.

In many cases, this will be an overheating issue, with your laptop turning itself off in order to avoid heat damage from further overheating.

There may be other causes as well, sometimes a drive or configuration, or sometimes software-related.

You don’t have to figure out the cause yourself– that’s why we’re here! Bring your laptop computer to us, and we’ll investigate the problem.

Laptop Water Damage and Liquid Damage

If you’ve spilled water, drinks (including tea, coffee, beer, wine or other alcohol) or other liquids on your laptop or notebook computer, this can be serious, particularly if it goes under the keyboard and gets inside the rest of the computer.

It can sometimes look like your computer escaped with little or no damage. However, assuming the worst is over and waiting for it to dry can be a mistake. Liquid can spread further over time and corrosion is an ongoing process. In fact, the residue in water can cause more damage after it’s mostly dried up.

The sooner you bring your computer to us after it’s been water-damaged, the better the chances of a successful repair.

If your computer was on at the time the damage occurred, please turn it off (but only if you can do so safely). If it was already off, leave it off. In either case, don’t use it again until we’ve had a chance to look at it, as there’s a risk of the liquid causing a short-circuit (and further damage) while it’s powered up.

Battery Replacement and Other Charging Problems

If your laptop battery appears to no longer be holding its charge, and you think it might need replaced, we’re the people to help you out!

We can source a replacement battery for most laptop and notebook models, and fit it (whether or not it’s user-replaceable).

Please note that problems apparently related to the battery can also be due to other causes. For example, a faulty charger/PSU, a problem with the charging socket on the computer (see the section on faulty connectors above) or even damage to the charging circuit. We will confirm for you which of these is the case before we go ahead and replace your battery.

Hard Drive Repair and Data Recovery

If there’s a problem with the hard drive in your machine, there’s a good chance we can fix the issue. If you think your drive is faulty our corrupt, we recommend that you stop using it until you’ve brought it to us. (Continued use could result in further corruption or wear to a failing mechanism that we need to recover the data).

If your laptop hard drive requires replacing anyway, we normally recommend that it is replaced with an SSD (solid state drive) instead. (See SSD installation below).

SSD Installation, Replacement and Data Recovery Services

Whether you want to upgrade your laptop’s old hard drive to an SSD, replace an existing SSD, or have data recovered from an SSD, we can carry this out for you.

If you suspect your SSD is either failing or has become corrupt, we strongly recommend you stop using it until it’s been looked at, as further use of a corrupt filesystem could result in further data being lost or overwritten.

Software Installation and Repair Services

Microsoft Windows Installation and Repair

We can install Windows on your laptop, including Microsoft Windows 11 (where supported) and Microsoft Windows 10. We also support older versions of Windows including Windows 8, Windows 7 and even Windows Vista and Windows XP-based installations where practical.

Apple Mac MacOS Installation, Upgrade and Repair

If you need your Apple Mac laptop (including MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro) upgraded to a newer version of MacOS or OS X, we can carry this out for all supported MacOS/OS X versions.

Similarly if you have any problems with your MacOS installation, we can look at that for you.

Other Software Installation, Upgrade and Repair Services

In addition to the above, we can also install various software on your laptop or help repair an existing installation. Whether you’re having trouble getting a particular application, game or other software up and running, or if you just want us to carry out the tedious work of installing and configuring it… we can do that!

We can even install one of several versions of Linux on your laptop, including Linux Mint, Ubuntu and more.
